Jazz
Jazz is a descendant of blues and has been called America’s classical music. It is one of America’s first truly indigenous musical genres. Originally, jazz was dance music performed by swing big bands. Before long, however, dance elements were replaced by improvisation as the key element. Jazz eventually fractured into several styles ranging from hard-hitting rhythms to relaxed, mellow melodies. Some of the ground-breaking artists of jazz include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie.
